Iraivan 2023 Tamil Psychological Thriller Review Cast & Where to Watch

Someone is killing women across the city. The police have no leads. Then a letter arrives with a smiley face drawn at the bottom. And the murders do not stop.
Iraivan is a Tamil psychological thriller that follows DCP Arjun, a police officer who plays by his own rules. When a serial killer starts leaving smiley faces at every crime scene, Arjun goes after him without waiting for permission.
The first half is tense, dark, and hard to put down. The second half loses some of that sharpness. But the performances and the background score make it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre.

Iraivan Story and Plot
Women are going missing. Bodies keep turning up. The killer taunts the police with letters signed with a smiley face.
DCP Arjun takes the case personally. He is not patient. He does not wait for evidence to stack up. He hunts. Together with his partner Andrew, he eventually corners the killer, Brahma, and puts him away.
Then the killings start again. Same signature. Same method. Either Brahma is out. Or someone is finishing what he started.
Arjun races to find the truth before the body count rises further. This time the threat cuts closer to home.
What the Film Gets Right
- Jayam Ravi is fully committed as Arjun. His action scenes hit hard and he carries the film on his shoulders when the script lets him down.
- Rahul Bose brings a cold, quiet menace to Brahma. He never overacts. He never needs to. His presence alone creates dread.
- Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score is outstanding. It builds tension where the screenplay cannot and keeps you engaged through the slower parts.
- The first half is tightly constructed. The mystery builds at a good pace and the investigation scenes are genuinely gripping.
- The film is bold. It takes risks with dark content that most Tamil productions avoid. That alone makes it stand apart.
Where the Film Falls Short
The second half is where Iraivan stumbles. The screenplay loses direction. Emotional scenes feel forced. The villain’s backstory is too thin for a film that relies so heavily on him.
Nayanthara is underused. Her role adds little to the story given what she is capable of. That is a clear missed opportunity.
Watch it for Jayam Ravi, Rahul Bose, and Yuvan Shankar Raja. Keep your expectations grounded and the film delivers enough to justify the time.
